Facing the Future: Top 10 HVAC Challenges—and Opportunities—in 2025
The HVAC industry is rapidly evolving, and 2025 is no exception. Between tightening regulations and rising customer expectations, contractors are being challenged like never before—but with each challenge comes a chance to grow.
Here’s a breakdown of the top issues contractors are facing this year—and how forward-thinking companies are turning them into opportunities.
1. Efficiency Standards Are Tightening
Energy efficiency isn’t just a trend—it’s a mandate. As regulations continue to ramp up, investing in high-efficiency equipment and sustainable practices is no longer optional. Contractors who test and measure system performance can better meet these standards and deliver real savings to their customers.
2. Navigating Regulations
From local building codes to national environmental mandates, staying up to date is critical. Proactive compliance protects your business and helps maintain your reputation.
3. Tech Is Moving Fast
The pace of innovation in HVAC—smart systems, IoT controls, heat pump advances—requires constant training and reinvestment. Contractors who keep learning and adapt quickly will maintain a competitive edge.
4. Technician Shortages
Finding skilled labor remains a major hurdle. The solution? Invest in training, mentorship, and a supportive work culture to attract and retain top talent.
5. Seasonal Demand Swings
Don’t let the summer surge or winter lull control your cash flow. Sell maintenance agreements and prioritize testing and measuring to drive steady year-round revenue.
6. Supply Chain Risks
While improving, supply chains are still unpredictable. Successful contractors are diversifying suppliers, managing inventory more closely, and keeping a buffer stock of key items.
7. Rising Material & Labor Costs
Margins are under pressure. To protect profitability, contractors are turning to operational efficiencies, better vendor negotiations, and cost-saving workflows.
8. Rising Customer Expectations
Today’s customers want quick responses, transparent pricing, and top-tier service. Clear communication, consistency, and a customer-first mindset are essential to build trust and loyalty.
9. More Competition
Standing out in a crowded market means more than offering good service—it takes strategic marketing and a focus on what makes your company different.
10. Emerging HVAC Trends
Smart systems and sustainability are becoming standard. Contractors who embrace innovation and evolve with customer preferences will position themselves for long-term growth.
HVAC Training and Education

5 Tips to Improve Flexible Duct Installations
Train Smarter. Install Better. Reduce Callbacks.
Flexible duct can be an effective solution when installed correctly—but too often, poor installation practices lead to airflow issues, reduced comfort, and unnecessary callbacks. At 2J Supply, we believe attention to detail during install makes all the difference.
Here are five practical tips to help your team improve performance on every flex duct job:
1. Avoid Sharp Turns
Sharp, 90-degree bends in flexible ductwork can choke off airflow and drive up static pressure. When duct must turn, use long, sweeping curves and support them well. Avoid kinks near boots and takeoffs by adding sheet metal elbows or rerouting to reduce stress.
Pro Tip: Structural framing in attics is a common obstacle. Plan ahead and route duct in a way that minimizes sharp angles.
2. Support Ducts Properly
Sagging ducts slow airflow and reduce efficiency. Most installers space supports too far apart, leading to droop over time. Aim for supports every 3 feet, and use wide straps (3" or more) or duct saddles instead of narrow wire or plumbing straps that can constrict air flow.
Pro Tip: Ducts should never sag more than 1 inch per 4 feet. Tight, supported runs = better performance.
3. Stretch Out the Core
Leaving excess duct core bunched up at boots or takeoffs restricts airflow. Always cut the core to length and stretch it tight before sealing. Neglecting this can reduce airflow by 30–40 CFM in a 6-inch duct.
Pro Tip: Stretch and secure from both ends before pulling insulation into place for a clean, effective seal.
4. Avoid Remote Plenums
Remote plenums (those ductboard boxes feeding multiple ducts) may look convenient but are airflow killers. They cause major pressure drops due to turbulence and lost velocity.
Better Alternative: Use extended plenums, proper transitions, or wyes for consistent airflow across all branches.
5. Size Flex Ducts Correctly
Flex ducts require different sizing than sheet metal due to the ribbed inner surface. Old-school rules of thumb won’t cut it. Avoid designing at a .10 friction rate—use .05 instead for more accurate airflow results.
Pro Tip: Use design tools specifically for flex ducts or adjust metal duct calculators accordingly.
Trust… but Verify
No matter how carefully you install, if you don’t measure airflow, you’re only guessing. Use balancing hoods and static pressure tools to confirm system performance. Show your crews how small adjustments can lead to major performance gains.
